What does the New Patient Exam consist of? Is it covered under my insurance?
During your new patient exam our doctors will do a very thorough exam. Also, we will take photos and any necessary radiographs, and our doctors will review these with you. Afterwards, our doctors will customize a treatment plan for you. Often, insurance companies cover a portion of this visit. *We do not know in advance what services (if any) YOUR insurance company will cover. We can only guess based on what other patients’ insurance companies have done in the past. All insurance companies (as well as the hundreds of different plans within each individual insurance company) vary on what they will or will not cover.
How does direct billing to my insurance work?
Bay Wellesley Dental is proud to offer our dental patients who have confirmed dental insurance the ability to use their coverage immediately at an appointment. Please make sure to give our dental staff your primary and secondary insurance plan number, breakdown, and remaining annual coverage, and we can save you from paying out of pocket and waiting for a reimbursement cheque.
Are dental payment plans available?
We are committed to create spectacular dental results. To help our patients, we offer 0% interest dental financing.
I am terrified of going to the dentist, but I have a lot of work that needs to be done. Aside from ‘knocking me out’ is there anything that can be done for me?
You are not alone in feeling this way. Millions of Canadians feel tremendous anxiety concerning dental treatment. Fear, coupled with embarrassment and shame, has kept nearly half of all Canadians from seeking necessary treatment for years, even decades. Fortunately, dental phobia doesn’t have to keep you away from the dentist any longer. Amenities like laughing gas, TVs, and more conservative, gentle procedures will help take the edge off. For some fearful patients, an anti-anxiety pill will do just fine. Most patients snooze through the appointment and feel no discomfort. Years of dental neglect are erased in just one appointment. Once-fearful and embarrassed patients chew without pain and smile with confidence for the first time in years! These benefits are often life-changing for people who have procrastinated getting their mouths healthy or enhancing their smiles.
How much is a cleaning?
No two mouths are the same! Everyone has different needs and there is no ‘flat’ rate on scaling appointments. The cost strictly depends on the current health of your teeth and gums. We begin our new patient hygiene appointments with the charting of the pockets (space between gums and tooth), bleeding upon probing, mobility and recession. Keep in mind “healthy gums don’t bleed…even with our special measuring dental tool. This in- depth ‘gum assessment’ helps the dentist and hygienist determine your current ‘periodontal status’ also known as health of your gums. We then will inform you how much time (and possibly how many appointments) it will take to get your gums and teeth back to a state of health! One of our caring team members will be glad to discuss this with you.
I’ve heard there is a link between unhealthy teeth and gums and heart disease. Is this true?
You heard right. Studies implicate gum disease with bleeding gums as a risk factor for developing heart disease. These studies show the bacterial infections of gum disease are associated with bacterial infection of the blood, inflammation, and a strong immune response, all of which are significant risk factors for the development of heart disease. Also, the most common strain of bacteria in dental plaque can cause blood clots that induces heart attacks when they escape into the bloodstream. Beyond heart disease, gum disease in pregnant women is considered a risk factor for low birth-weight babies. Proper brushing and yes, of course, flossing, combined with routine visits to your dentist help to reduce your risk of gum disease. Ask us if you are at risk for gum disease and what you can do to eliminate it.
Why do I need x-rays?
X-rays are critical in diagnosing cavities/decay in between your teeth and helps us identify any problems below the gumline and at the root of your teeth. Please be assured that we utilize digital x-rays which means the lowest radiation exposure to you. We also do our best to keep x-rays to a minimum.
Why Do I need Fluoride?
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. Every day, minerals are added to and lost from a tooth’s enamel layer through two processes, demineralization, and remineralization. Minerals are lost (demineralization) from a tooth’s enamel layer when acids — formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth — attack the enamel. Minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited (remineralization) to the enamel layer from the foods and waters consumed. Too much demineralization without enough remineralization to repair the enamel layer leads to tooth decay. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It can also reverse early decay. All this being said, your dentist and hygienist will determine if in fact you would benefit from fluoride treatment. Remember, “No two mouths are the same”.
Which one is my best treatment, Invisalign or Veneers? Which is right for you?
Are you comparing Invisalign to veneers to help you determine the best way to improve the look of your smile? Both are excellent options for helping people achieve their goals for a healthier looking mouth and for feeling much more confident in the look of teeth. If you are comparing Invisalign to veneers you should know that they are very different in their approach. Invisalign is used primarily for straightening, whereas veneers help with the look of teeth but are especially used for damaged teeth. Invisalign is an alternative to braces whereas veneers could be described as an alternative to false teeth because they are a capping system.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses clear trays to helps straighten your teeth and align your mouth properly. They allow you to achieve a straighter smile without the need for braces. Not only are they less obvious than metal braces but they also considerably shorten the timeframe for getting your teeth to look better and are not only much more comfortable but make cleaning your teeth easy, too. Many people, especially adults, look to the Invisalign option to help them correct spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite issues.
What are Veneers?
Veneers offer a great way to improve your smile as well. They are very popular and have become more mainstream in recent years. Instead of re-aligning your mouth and / or teeth like Invisalign trays do, veneers are bonded to your existing teeth. They bond to your tooth enamel as a thin porcelain covering that dramatically improves the look of the tooth. Veneers can help with discoloration, shape, and damaged or chipped teeth.
Which is best? Invisalign or Veneers?
When examining Invisalign vs. Veneers, there are several variables you’ll want to look at; cost, timing, and your specific oral health situation to determine the best course of action for your desired outcome. By talking to our dentists, you can examine both options to determine which one is better for you. Our dentists will work with you to help you meet your specific goals based on the existing condition of your teeth and your financial situation. Veneers generally cost considerably more than Invisalign, especially if you are looking at veneers for several teeth. Veneers are installed on a per tooth basis whereas Invisalign involves a series of trays based on your specific situation. Veneers can last anywhere from ten to thirty years but are not right for everyone. A consultation with our qualified dentists who are experienced in veneers will help you determine whether they are the right solution for you. In some cases, preparation needs to be done to your teeth for the veneers to be installed that permanently changes the look of your original tooth. Whether you are comparing Invisalign vs. veneers for yourself or for a family member, the best way to determine the ideal course of action is to book a consultation. our dentists will examine your teeth and will formulate a customized plan to help you achieve the best outcome possible.
